Amber Hydrophone Array Near Waterfall Wall

by Evelyn Mills

Rich amber light from the setting sun illuminates a dense cluster of cylindrical hydrophones suspended in a tight formation against a weathered concrete wall. The array hangs from a thick cable descending from the upper frame, its metallic surfaces reflecting the golden glow. To the right, a narrow vertical crack in the stone emits a continuous, sheet-like waterfall that defies gravity and plumbing, cascading down the rough masonry. Early spring grasses in muted greens grow at the base of the wall, catching the low-angle light. The water flows with a smooth, glassy texture, merging with the dry, dusty ground below. A small, dark hydrophone sensor at the bottom of the cluster sits just inches above the wet stone, showing the impossible flow.
