Twilight Silt Lines on Somali Levee Riprap in along a levee path above floodwater in Somalia

Twilight Silt Lines on Somali Levee Riprap

by Phillip Foreman

Low-hanging clouds diffuse the fading twilight, casting a soft, reflected glow across the rough surface of the levee riprap. The massive, interlocking stones bear distinct, dark horizontal silt lines marking the peak of a recent flood. These jagged gray rocks rest heavily on the riverbank, their coarse textures against the smooth, wet bands of dried mud. The angle from the ground emphasizes the sheer scale of the embankment rising against the sky. Along the base, loose gravel mixes with the damp earth, leading the eye up to the clean, dry stone face above the waterline. A faint reflection of the silt line shimmers on the dark, still water below.
