Silt Stains on Levee Riprap After Flood in along a dam spillway in al-Bab

Silt Stains on Levee Riprap After Flood

by Briana Adkins

Dark horizontal bands of wet silt mark the rough gray stones of the levee riprap face, tracing the peak water level left behind by the recent flood. Late afternoon sun falls through overhanging leaves, casting shifting patches of dappled light across the textured surface. The stones, varying in size and angularity, form a steep slope that draws toward a distant vanishing point along the dam spillway. Dry grasses in the foreground show late spring green, while the air seems to ripple with the visible motion of wind whipping the foliage. The heavy masonry stands as a solid barrier against the water, its lower sections still bearing the dark evidence of the recent surge. One stone at the bottom edge reflects a patch of sky.
