Dark Silt Lines on Andorra Levee Riprap Face in along a levee path above floodwater in Andorra

Dark Silt Lines on Andorra Levee Riprap Face

by Rosie Shelton

Bright midmorning sun illuminates a steep levee face constructed of rough, angular riprap stones. A distinct dark band of dried silt stains the lower third of the rockwork, marking the height reached by recent floodwaters. The stones vary in shades of gray and tan, their jagged edges catching the harsh light while deep crevices remain in shadow. Above the stain, the dry stones appear weathered and pale. Converging lines of the embankment draw toward a distant vanishing point where the path meets the horizon. A small patch of green vegetation rests on the very top edge of the wall, against the stark, civic austerity of the gray stone and the wet-looking, brownish-gray silt residue below.
