Tidal Island at Dawn Near Stellenbosch

by Tiffany McLean

Silvery winter light floods a wide panoramic view of a tidal island near Stellenbosch, exposed during low tide. Wet, dark rocks glisten under a sky still heavy with the aftermath of a clearing storm. Pools of stagnant water reflect the pale gray clouds above, while scattered debris from the recent storm rests on the sand flats. The turn of seasons is visible in the muted tones of the surrounding vegetation, where winter grasses lie flat against the damp earth. Jagged stone formations rise from the receding water, their rough textures softened by the moisture. The horizon stretches endlessly, showing the vast, quiet scale of the landscape before the sun fully breaks the horizon. A thin layer of mist rests on the low-lying ground between the rock outcrops.
