Tanzania Salt Ponds Aerial Sinkhole View

by Lila Mooney

Emerald water fills a circular sinkhole, its surface mirroring the deep blue of a cloudless sky above. Thick, tangled roots drape from the dark rim, dipping just above the liquid plane without touching the surface. Surrounding the cenote, vast rectangular salt pans stretch across the flat terrain, their white crusts glistening under the fading daylight. Narrow earthen causeways divide the ponds into geometric grids that extend toward the horizon. As evening approaches, distant city lights begin to twinkle along the low skyline, reflecting as faint orange streaks on the wet ground. The texture of the dried salt contrasts sharply with the smooth, dark water of the hole. One root tip hovers millimeters from the reflection of the sky.
