Cenote Sinkhole Over Braided River Channels

by Alan Witt

Flat noon light strikes a deep circular sinkhole where dark water mirrors the heavy overcast sky above. Thick, gnarled roots dangle from the forest rim, disappearing into the shadowed depths. Below, braided river channels twist through the landscape like silver veins, their paths defined by wet sandbars and rushing water. The water surface in the sinkhole remains glassy despite the monsoon season, reflecting the gray clouds and the hanging vegetation. Roots hang vertically, creating stark lines against the fluid movement of the river below. The texture of the water shifts from smooth in the pool to rippled in the channels, highlighting the geological contrast between the still pool and the flowing river system.
