Aerial view of sinkhole cenote with roots

by Valentino Morris

Midsummer evening light bathes a deep sinkhole cenote in Armenia, viewed from directly above. Thick tree roots drape from the rim, hanging like ropes into the dark water below. Below the cenote, orchard blocks stretch out in geometric rows, their green canopies against the dry earth. Irrigation lines snake through the fields, catching the last daylight. In the distance, a soft glow from a town spreads across the horizon, marking the edge of the valley. Ground fog pools in the lower depressions between the orchards, creating a soft white layer that obscures the terrain. The water in the cenote reflects the fading sky, while the roots cast sharp shadows against the stone walls. One root tip touches the water surface, rippling the dark liquid.
