Under the flat glare of noon, a tannery worker in Fez stands waist-deep in a rectangular stone pit filled with dark brown dye. He holds a wooden mallet in one hand and grips the rough edge of the vat with the other, his posture bent from years of labor. The sun reflects off the wet surface of the leather soaking in the mixture. Surrounding the pit are stacked piles of cured hides and a blue and white porcelain bowl resting on a nearby ledge, likely holding tools or water. The gritty reality of the Chouara Tannery, with the texture of the leather and the stark shadows defining the space.
