Dye Vat in Fez
by Shannon Good
Early morning light falls through the high, narrow windows of a tannery courtyard in Fez, casting long, sharp shadows across the vibrant dye vats below. A worker in a loose white djellaba stands on the wooden edge, carefully stirring a vat of deep indigo with a long wooden pole, while steam rises gently into the cool air. In the foreground, a stack of drying leather hides rests on a rough stone ledge, catching the first warm rays of the sun. Nearby, a simple clay flowerpot holds a resilient green plant, its leaves glistening with dew. The raw texture of traditional craftsmanship, with the bright colors of the dyes contrasting against the muted earth tones of the surrounding architecture.
