Fez Processing Hides at Midday Light

Midday sunlight floods the open-air tannery yard in Fez, casting sharp shadows across rows of stone vats filled with dyed liquids in shades of ochre, indigo, and crimson. Several leather workers stand waist-deep in the pits, their legs splashed with dye as they rhythmically stir and lift thick hides using simple wooden paddles. The air appears thick with dust and steam rising from the warm water. In the background, the intricate geometric tiles of nearby medina buildings contrast with the raw industrial activity. A few bundles of dried leaves and branches sit on the stone edges, ready for use in the curing process. The enduring traditional craftsmanship that defines this historic Moroccan city.
