Tannery Worker in Fez in in Fez, Morocco

Tannery Worker in Fez

by Nia Calderon

A tannery worker stands knee-deep in a stone trough of murky olive-green dye, his bare legs submerged in the chemical bath. He holds a heavy wooden stick, stirring the sludge to ensure even saturation of the hides piled around him. The harsh winter noon sun beats down, creating sharp, high-contrast shadows across the uneven stone floor. Behind him, the old city walls rise, textured with centuries of grime. A discarded leather apron hangs on a nearby hook, and a clay wash basin sits empty on a ledge, catching the bright light.
