Tannery Worker in Fez Drizzle in at a public square in Ville Nouvelle, Fez

Tannery Worker in Fez Drizzle

by Katie Ruiz

Patches of ochre and deep brown stain the wet stone steps where a worker stands in Ville Nouvelle, Fez. Early autumn rain falls as a fine, gray mist, turning the air hazy and the light soft. Reflected sunlight glimmers off shallow puddles, casting fractured highlights across the worker's dark leather apron and the rough, damp clay of the square. The subject wears a simple white garment beneath the heavy apron, their posture rigid against the drizzle. Pools of dyed water ripple near the edges of the frame, their surface disturbed by the falling rain. One drop slides down the rim of a ceramic basin, merging with the gray runoff.
