Sweeping Basin in Fez

Mist rests on the narrow stone steps of the medina as a tannery worker in a faded blue djellaba pauses beside a shallow basin, using a broom to sweep away slurry. The morning light is diffuse and gray, softening the harsh geometry of the surrounding arches. Beside him, a bicycle rests against a wall, its wire basket empty but dusted with white lime powder. In the background, the silhouette of a minaret rises through the fog, while mineral rings stain the edges of the basin where water has evaporated. The quiet, wet labor of the early hours, with steam rising from the vats and the damp cobblestones reflecting the muted sky.
