Artisan Working in Essaouira

The heavy, wet dusk of Essaouira presses against the open doorway of a coastal workshop, where the gray light catches the slick, soap-streaked blue tiles of a low counter. A local artisan wipes his hands on a faded indigo apron, his attention fixed on a brass tea kettle steaming beside a stack of white ceramic plates, their rims gleaming with recent rain. Outside, the wind whips rain into the street, blurring the colorful wooden shutters of neighboring shops into soft, saturated strokes of turquoise and ochre.
