Wet Fabric in Essaouira

by Alonzo Nichols

Rain-slicked blue-painted doors of the medina glow under the flat, gray light of early morning, water beading on the textured plaster and pooling in the cobblestone gutters. A local artisan leans against a doorway, shaking out a length of indigo-dyed fabric that hangs heavy and wet, the fibers saturated and dark. Near his feet, a cluster of white pigeons huddles for warmth, their feathers ruffled against the damp chill, while a rusted iron latch on a nearby shutter catches the diffuse light, against the smooth, glazed tiles of a nearby shop front.
