Mangrove Roots Silhouetted Against Monsoon Haze in in a bloom-heavy meadow near Kingston

Mangrove Roots Silhouetted Against Monsoon Haze

by Brian Rice

Soft overcast light floods a Kingston meadow where mangrove roots rise from the damp earth in a tangled web of dark silhouettes. The midday sun, diffused by heavy monsoon clouds, casts no sharp shadows, leaving the aerial root systems as intricate black lace against a pale, hazy sky. Distant mist clings low to the horizon, softening the transition between the wet ground and the sky. The roots, thick and knotted, twist upward and outward, their surfaces slick with recent rain. Beyond the tangled foreground, the meadow stretches into a blur of green and grey, with the low horizon line obscured by the atmospheric haze. at the edge is a small cluster of white wildflowers clinging to a root base, their petals dull and waterlogged.
