Ghost Town Barber Pole Amidst Ruins in among toppled columns and nettles in Egypt

Ghost Town Barber Pole Amidst Ruins

by Santiago Hogan

Soft, overcast light washes over a weathered barber pole leaning precariously against a toppled stone column. The red and white stripes have faded to dusty rose and chalky gray, peeling where sand has ground into the wood. Tall green nettles push through cracks in the crumbling boardwalk, their serrated leaves glistening with residual storm moisture. In the background, more fractured masonry lies scattered across the sandy ground, partially obscured by low-hanging clouds. The sky remains a uniform sheet of pale gray, diffusing shadows and eliminating harsh contrasts. A twisted wire hangs from the pole's base, resting on a bed of dry, cracked earth. The red stripe ends abruptly where the wood meets the soil.
