Tapir at Boat Quay River Edge Singapore

by Kristina Francis

Soft, diffused afternoon light falls through a thin layer of mist clinging to the reed bed at the edge of the Singapore river. A tapir stands partially submerged in the cool water, its dark, velvety coat against the pale, frothy ripples near its hooves. The animal's white underbelly and distinctive lip ring are sharp against the grey-green backdrop of wet reeds. A weathered wooden piling from the nearby Boat Quay structure creates a natural frame, positioning the tapir between the timber and the open water. The air remains still, evidenced by the unbroken surface of the river reflecting the overcast sky. One droplet slides from a reed tip, vanishing into the dark water below.
