Tapir at Glacial Stream Goa Dry Season

by Jackson Cook

Sunlight floods the shallow glacial stream in Goa, illuminating the wet, dark hide of a tapir standing knee-deep in the water. The animal remains perfectly still, its broad snout hovering just above the clear surface, eyes fixed on the riverbed below. Dry, golden grass lines the riverbank, against the cool, grey stones visible beneath the shallow flow. Warm coastal air settles over the scene, catching the fine hairs on the tapir's back. The low angle emphasizes the creature's massive shoulder and the texture of its muddy hooves gripping the slippery rocks. A small ripple spreads outward from the tapir's front leg as it shifts its weight slightly.
