Shoebill Stork Blue Hour Split Weather Newfoundland
by Dana Ali
Cool blue twilight washes the muddy game trail in Newfoundland where a shoebill stork stands rigidly. The bird's massive, shoe-shaped bill points forward while its grey feathers catch the dim ambient light. A sharp vertical line divides the frame. To the left, heavy snow falls against the darkening bog, coating the ferns in white. To the right, bright sunshine strikes the same ground, turning the mud into a glossy brown and illuminating the stork's right wing with warm gold. The shadow of the stork stretches long across the sunny half, while the snowy side remains flat and shadowless. Frost rests on the grass blades on the cold side, melting instantly into puddles on the warm side. The bird's dark eye reflects the impossible horizon line where the two weather patterns meet.
