Silhouetted Flood Control Room at Blue Hour in beside a storm surge barrier in Idaho

Silhouetted Flood Control Room at Blue Hour

by Carlos Russell

Heat shimmer distorts the air above the concrete foundation of a flood barrier control room standing against the deep indigo sky of early summer. The structure appears as a stark black silhouette, its flat roofline and vertical edges cutting sharply against the fading twilight. Inside the glass enclosure, the glow of tide charts and a panel of steel buttons remains faintly visible, though the interior details dissolve into shadow. Converging lines of the barrier wall stretch from the foreground toward a distant vanishing point, showing the scale of the infrastructure. The heat haze ripples across the sun-warmed pavement, blurring the boundary between the solid metal controls and the atmospheric distortion of the cooling evening.
