Swiss Storm Tunnel Evening Shadows Cables in beside a storm surge barrier in Switzerland

Swiss Storm Tunnel Evening Shadows Cables

by Mei Delaney

Deep shadow fills the service tunnel beneath the storm surge barrier in late summer Switzerland. Fluorescent strips cast a cool, pale glow along the ceiling, illuminating rows of metal cable trays and heavy pipework. Shallow water covers the concrete floor, creating a mirror that reflects the overhead infrastructure with slight distortion. Rim light traces the edges of the pipes and the water's surface, separating the dark mass from the surrounding void. The air appears to vibrate visually around the transformers and dense cables, suggesting intense electrical activity. From a birds-eye perspective, the parallel lines of the tunnel create clear structural monumentality and infinite repetition. The final row of cables disappears into the deepening blue twilight at the far end.
