Hydrophone Array Descending Into Sea in at a remote field station in Hamburg

Hydrophone Array Descending Into Sea

by Herman Garrison

Steel-blue water fills the frame as a dark hydrophone array descends from the edge of a research vessel. Late summer rain creates fine ripples across the surface, catching the low sunset light in scattered silver streaks. The equipment appears as a sharp silhouette against the glowing horizon, its cables and sensors defined only by their outlines. Droplets bead on the metal frame, running down in short, erratic paths. The heavy industrial texture of the vessel's deck meets the fluid motion of the sea. One droplet slides off the lowest sensor head, breaking the water's surface tension.
