Flood Control Room Under Noon Sky in beside a storm surge barrier near Ndjamena

Flood Control Room Under Noon Sky

by Angel Cross

Flat noon light bleaches the corrugated metal roof of the control station, against the soft, diffused glow lingering after recent rain. Inside the open-sided structure, steel buttons gleam on a weathered console beside large tide charts marked with red ink. The charts flutter slightly as wind whips through the open bay, revealing the dry, dusty ground outside where the storm surge barrier stands. Concrete pillars anchor the room against the horizon, while the cool season air leaves the metal surfaces cool to the touch. One red button sits pressed against a faded blue dial, its edge catching a sharp highlight.
