Silhouetted Dik-Diks at Carrollton Reed Bed Dawn

by Ruth Ellis

Low morning light strikes the horizon haze, turning the reed bed edge into a glowing backdrop. Two dik-diks stand close together, their bodies reduced to dark shapes against the bright sky. Their enormous eyes catch the faint glow, appearing as deep, reflective pools within the silhouette. Humid air hangs low, softening the distant grasses into a blurred wash of green and gold. Fine hairs along their necks catch the backlight, creating a faint, fuzzy outline. The ground beneath them is dark and damp, holding the shape of the morning dew. The pair remains perfectly still, their posture taut with alert waiting. A thin strand of reed bends slightly near the left hoof, marking the quiet weight of the scene.
