Silhouetted Dik-dik Pair at Yukon Sunrise in above a glacial stream in Yukon

Silhouetted Dik-dik Pair at Yukon Sunrise

by Eileen Hendricks

Pale blue dawn light spills over a frozen glacial stream, illuminating low-hanging clouds that obscure the horizon. Two small dik-diks stand motionless in the scrubland, their dark forms reduced to sharp silhouettes against the brightening sky. Enormous, dark eyes reflect the first rays of the sun, appearing as bright white spots on their faces. The ground beneath them is a mix of dry, brown grass and patches of white frost. The animals remain perfectly still, their heads held high, creating a stark contrast between the soft, diffused light of the polar night and the sudden intensity of the sunrise. A thin layer of ice glitters on the stream surface just behind them.
