Silhouetted Coastal Battery Ruins at Dawn

Deep shadow swallows the courtyard near Tobruk while a sharp rim of pale winter light defines the jagged edges of the derelict coastal battery. Tall, brittle grasses reclaim the stone floor, their frost-dusted tips catching the first rays of nautical dawn. Two heavy cannons stand motionless, their iron barrels pointing seaward in a final, silent vigil. The stone walls are rough and pitted, stripped of mortar in places to reveal the dark interior voids. The sky above is a clear, unbroken expanse of cool blue, against the dark silhouette of the fortifications. A thin line of frost glitters along the rim of the nearest cannon barrel, marking the boundary between the heavy stone and the rising sun.
