Silhouette Firefly on Bogura Ridge at Twilight

by Zara Green

Heavy overcast skies press low against the horizon, turning the dry season ridge into a flat, gray expanse. One firefly rests on the rough, wind-scoured earth, its body a tiny, glowing orb of yellow-green light. The backlight from the fading sky renders the insect a sharp black silhouette, highlighting the delicate curve of its wings and the thinness of its legs gripping the soil. The ground is cracked and dusty, scattered with sparse, brittle grass stalks that stand rigid against the wind. The glow offers the only warmth in the cool, muted palette of grays and browns. A faint, soft halo of light diffuses around the insect's abdomen, creating a small circle of brightness against the dark, textured dust.
