Glowing Firefly Over Glacial Stream at Twilight

by Isaiah Marsh

Pale lavender clouds hang low over the dark water of a glacial stream near Faro, their soft light barely touching the surface. In the lower right corner, a single firefly rests on a submerged stone, its abdomen emitting a steady, cool green pulse. The insect sits in deep shadow, outlined only by a thin rim of twilight that catches the edge of its wings. Surrounding rocks are slick with moisture, reflecting the muted sky. The water flows slowly beneath the insect, its surface broken by small ripples that distort the faint light. The glow contrasts sharply against the dark, wet textures of the stream bed and the heavy, overcast sky above.
