Roman Bath Ruins Mosaic Floor Eritrea Monsoon

by Jimmie Barlow

Hard coastal sunlight floods the interior of a collapsed cloister structure, illuminating a fragmented mosaic floor where geometric patterns of red, white, and black tesserae remain embedded in the earth. Green vines climb the crumbling stone arches overhead, their leaves glistening with recent monsoon rain. The ground is a mix of wet gravel and exposed clay, reflecting the intense midday glare. Broken masonry blocks lie scattered across the perimeter, framing the preserved floor section which sits slightly lower than the surrounding debris. Moss rests on the damp lower edges of the remaining walls, marking the transition between the ancient stone and the encroaching tropical vegetation. One shard of blue glass catches the light near the corner of the mosaic, against the rust-colored soil.
