Falling Mosaic Tiles in Abandoned Asyut Bathhouse

by Aaron Jackson

Deep shadows swallow the crumbling interior of an abandoned bathhouse near Asyut, where early winter fog pools thick and white across the stone floor. Rim light cuts sharp edges along the upper wall, illuminating a chaotic cascade of blue and white mosaic tiles peeling away from the plaster. The tiles hang suspended in the air, frozen mid-fall, their glazed surfaces catching the faint twilight glow. Dust motes swirl in the cold, still air, settling on the fractured geometric patterns below. A heavy curtain of shadow obscures the far corners, while the fog rises slowly around the broken archway, blurring the boundary between floor and wall. at the edge is a single tile resting on the wet stone, its glint reflecting the fading sky.
