Cuttlefish Camouflage in Belize Reef Crevice

by Jasper Norris

Soft, overcast dawn light falls through clear turquoise water, illuminating a cuttlefish nestled in a narrow reef crevice. The creature's skin ripples with shifting patterns of brown and white, mimicking the rough limestone texture of the surrounding stone. Fine sand grains drift slowly in the gentle current, suspended in the column of water that stretches into the distance. Ripples on the surface above create a faint, dancing grid of shadows that falls across the cuttlefish's mantle. The water remains exceptionally transparent, revealing layers of coral formations receding into the blue haze behind the subject. A small patch of orange algae rests on the crevice edge, providing a sharp color contrast against the muted earth tones of the stone and the animal.
