Pharaoh Cuttlefish Rippling Colors on Reef in beside a volcanic reef overhang near Cairns

Pharaoh Cuttlefish Rippling Colors on Reef

by Bryan Tanner

Soft afternoon light falls through water thick with plankton haze, creating a muted backdrop beside a volcanic reef overhang near Cairns. A pharaoh cuttlefish floats at eye level, its skin alive with undulating bands of reddish-brown and pale cream that ripple across its mantle. The creature hovers motionless against the dark, porous rock, its texture shifting rapidly from smooth to granular as it mesmerizes unseen prey. Fine suspended particles drift in the water column, blurring the distance and softening the edges of the coral formations. The water holds a stillness, broken only by the rhythmic expansion of the cuttlefish's skin. A faint shadow of the overhang falls across the sandy bottom below.
