Cuttlefish Through Volcanic Arch in Cobalt Light

by Ross Roy

Cobalt blue water fills the frame as a cuttlefish glides beneath a jagged volcanic rock arch. The creature's skin shimmers with metallic silver highlights where bright midmorning sunlight penetrates the clear surface. Fine plankton haze softens the background reef crevice, creating a layered depth behind the subject. The rock formation displays rough, porous textures in dark grays and browns, against the smooth, undulating movement of the marine animal. Sunlight falls through the water column, illuminating particles that drift in the current. The low angle emphasizes the scale of the arch overhead while the cuttlefish's tentacles trail slightly behind its streamlined body. A sharp edge of the volcanic stone catches a glint of reflected light just above the creature's mantle.
