Cuttlefish Through Volcanic Arch in Blue Light in beneath a reef ledge in tropical shallows near Denpasar

Cuttlefish Through Volcanic Arch in Blue Light

by Paula Bartlett

Cobalt water fills the frame, filtered through the canopy above to create dappled patterns of silver and deep blue. A cuttlefish floats beneath a dark volcanic rock arch, its skin shimmering with metallic highlights that catch the filtered sunlight. Tiny plankton particles drift in the haze, softening the background reef ledge. The creature's mantle rests horizontally against the shadow of the stone, while its tentacles extend gently into the current. Sunlight fractures on the rough texture of the volcanic rock, illuminating the water's surface tension. The arch frames the animal perfectly, separating the foreground from the distant, muted coral garden. A final beam of light strikes the cuttlefish's eye, creating a sharp point of reflection against the surrounding darkness.
