Mimic Octopus Shifting Shapes in Winter Kelp Forest in through a forest of kelp fronds near Tsuruhashi, Osaka

Mimic Octopus Shifting Shapes in Winter Kelp Forest

by Joaquin Ellis

Bright winter sunlight penetrates the clear water near Tsuruhashi, Osaka, illuminating a mimic octopus as it reshapes its body against a pale sandy bottom. Tall kelp fronds rise vertically around the creature, their dark green blades swaying gently in the current. The octopus extends flexible arms that ripple with texture, mimicking the form of a flatfish as it glides forward. Thousands of suspended particles glitter like tiny stars in the light column, catching the late afternoon rays. Shadows from the kelp stretch across the sand, creating a pattern of light and dark stripes that shift with the water movement. The sandy floor shows fine ripples and scattered debris, at the base of the scene in a natural underwater environment.
