Iridescent Oil Water Patterns in Latakia Arcade

by Tonya Stanton

Dim indigo twilight falls through the glass roof of a Latakia arcade, illuminating a puddle of oil and water on the stone floor. The liquid surface fractures into swirling, iridescent cell patterns that shift between violet, teal, and burnt orange. One, impossible flower grows from the center of the slick, its stem rising to the height of a tree while its petals remain delicate and translucent. Warm interior lamps cast long, soft shadows across the wet pavement, highlighting the texture of the stone beneath the fluid film. The flower's leaves catch the window light, creating sharp, glassy reflections against the dark, damp ground. At the edge of the frame, a cracked tile meets the glowing, shifting boundary of the oil slick.
