New Mexico Canyon River Sunset Ridge View in from a ridge above layered foothills in New Mexico

New Mexico Canyon River Sunset Ridge View

by Georgia Moss

Sedimentary strata of layered foothills glow amber in the fading light of a cool season sunset in New Mexico. A deep canyon carved by a river cuts through the landscape, its floor hidden in shadow below the ridge. Dry sagebrush and grasses in the foreground bend sharply against the wind, their edges blurred by rapid motion. Rugged rock faces catch the last sun, creating sharp contrasts between warm orange highlights and deep indigo shadows. The river appears as a dark, narrow ribbon winding through the geological formation, defined by steep, eroded banks rising on either side. One stalk of grass in the immediate foreground leans heavily into the gust, its tip a soft blur against the darkening sky.
