Wind Rippling Spring in Red Canyon in in New Mexico

Wind Rippling Spring in Red Canyon

by Gail Foreman

Pale winter light spills across a red sandstone canyon, revealing a small pool of water fed by a spring. The surface of the oasis breaks into rippled silver streaks as wind whips across the water against the deep crimson rock walls. Sparse green vegetation rests on the damp earth near the water's edge, beside dry, rust-colored gravel scattered nearby. Shadows stretch long and soft across the canyon floor, showing the steep, layered geology rising into the predawn darkness. The wind moves the water, creating a delicate dance of light and shadow on the surface. One reflection of the canyon wall breaks the water's surface, mirroring the rough texture of the stone above.
