Chinook Wind Melts Snow on Hokkaido Foothills in over a horizon of stacked thunderheads in Hokkaido

Chinook Wind Melts Snow on Hokkaido Foothills

by Jeffrey Marshall

Steel-blue evening light washes over a Hokkaido mountain foothill where patches of white snow retreat against the warmth of a chinook wind. Thick mist rests on the lower slopes, blurring the boundary between the darkening earth and the sky. Behind the foothill, a horizon of stacked thunderheads rises in heavy, layered bands, their undersides deepening into indigo. The snow surface shows texture from melting, revealing damp, dark earth beneath. Green grass blades emerge sporadically from the melting edge, standing stiff in the cool air. The light reflects off wet stones along the ridge, creating sharp, cool highlights that contrast with the soft, gray haze drifting through the valley floor.
