Golden light breaks across the horizon, illuminating the undersides of fast-moving cloud bands that streak over a Washington highland plateau. Deep shadows cloak the rolling terrain below, where thick ground fog pools in the low valleys like a white sea. The first rays of dawn catch the edges of the clouds, creating a sharp rim light that separates them from the darkening sky. Midsummer vegetation remains hidden beneath the mist, leaving only the texture of the fog visible against the dark earth. A faint line of gold rests on the distant ridge, marking the boundary between night and day.
