Melon Vines on Sandy Rows at Dusk in along freshly irrigated rows in Nigeria

Melon Vines on Sandy Rows at Dusk

by Leonardo Knapp

Copper-toned light washes over freshly irrigated rows where melon vines spread across coarse, pale sand mulched with dry straw. The ground lies flat beneath the frame, revealing the rough texture of the soil and the tangled, vibrant green leaves of the crops. Low-lying fog pools in the depressions between the raised beds, softening the edges of the sandy mounds while the wind scatters loose straw particles across the surface. The seasonal shift is visible in the slight browning of leaf tips and the crispness of the straw. Shadows stretch long and thin, cutting across the wet sand near the irrigation channels. A cluster of unripe melons rests partially buried in the mulch, their smooth skin reflecting the fading firelight warmth of the sky.
