Magenta Sky Sea Urchin Kelp Edge Porto in above a cold-water reef edge near Porto

Magenta Sky Sea Urchin Kelp Edge Porto

by Catalina Bruce

A solitary sea urchin rests on the sandy edge of a cold-water reef near Porto, its dark spines contrasting against the pale seabed. Above, the water glows with an impossible deep magenta hue, a sky color that has shifted from the blue afternoon to a surreal violet. Green underwater light falls through slow-moving surface ripples, casting fractured patterns across the urchin's shell and the surrounding kelp fronds. The water remains exceptionally clear, revealing individual grains of sand and the delicate texture of the kelp blades. Tiny bubbles rest on the urchin's spikes, suspended in the stillness. The impossible magenta light reflects sharply off the wet surface of a nearby rock, at the base of the surreal atmosphere in tangible detail.
