Sea Urchin Spine Base on Rain Beaded Metal

by Derek Levine

Vibrant orange and black spines rise sharply from the calcified test, their rough, granular texture against the smooth, wet metal beneath. Droplets of rain rest on the silver surface, distorting the reflection of a nearby neon sign that casts electric blue and magenta streaks across the curve of the shell. The early spring evening light settles into the shadows, leaving the upper ridges of the urchin illuminated while the lower corners fade into deep obscurity. Water beads fracture the neon glow into fragmented shards of light that dance along the spine bases. one drop of moisture rests precariously on the edge of a spine, catching the artificial hue of the room.
