Cambodian Pchum Ben Ceremony in Guilin Chapel

Stained glass panels cast fractured patches of crimson and cobalt across the stone floor of a chapel in Guilin. A group of people in traditional Cambodian attire kneels in rows, their hands pressed together in the Pchum Ben ancestor ceremony. Soft overcast light from high windows blends with the warm glow of oil lamps settling into the dark corners of the room. The low angle view emphasizes the height of the vaulted ceiling and the solemn posture of the participants. Gold embroidery on dark robes catches the diffused light, against the cool shadows pooling near the base of the walls. One flame flickers on a small brass stand in the foreground.
