Ivy Reclaiming Abandoned Switchboard in Fukuoka Rain

by Kara Berger

Steady rain sheets down on rusted copper wires and heavy wooden switchboards inside a ruined telephone exchange near Fukuoka. Thick green ivy climbs the damp masonry walls, its leaves dripping with water droplets that catch the late afternoon light filtering through the canopy. The switchboards sit empty, their plugs pulled and sockets dark, while moss softens the edges of the broken concrete floor. Water stains streak the gray plaster in vertical lines, marking the passage of monsoon storms. Sunlight breaks through the heavy gray clouds in patches, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air beside the decaying machinery. One wet leaf rests on a row of unlit indicator lights.
