Night Aerial View of Braided Floodwater Malawi Dunes in above dune fields and dry wadis in Malawi

Night Aerial View of Braided Floodwater Malawi Dunes

by Emmanuel Hansen

Dark, sinuous channels of water wind across the landscape, their surfaces catching a thin rim of light against the deep shadow of the surrounding dune fields. The braided pattern creates a complex network of curves that dominate the frame, contrasting sharply with the matte, dry texture of the wadis. Cool season air settles over the terrain, leaving the sand and rock surfaces appearing dormant and still. The water reflects the faint ambient glow, appearing almost black until the light traces its edges. Fine ripples disturb the surface, breaking the smooth flow into fragmented lines. A sharp line of illumination separates the water from the dark sand, defining the boundary between the fluid and the solid earth.
