Dust Devil Spins Over Wet Field in Monsoon Light

by Arthur Hurst

Reflected sunlight glimmers across a wet, packed earth field where a narrow column of swirling dust rises from the ground. The vortex, a tight spiral of tan and ochre particles, twists upward against a backdrop of heavy, grey monsoon clouds. Puddles on the surface catch the bright, diffuse light, creating scattered points of white reflection that contrast with the dark, damp soil. The dust column remains distinct yet slightly softened by the moisture in the air. In the distance, a few low, simple structures with reddish clay roofs sit beside the flat terrain. The dust devil moves steadily across the ground, leaving a faint trail of disturbed earth in its wake. A small, dry patch of grass near the column's base stands still, untouched by the spinning air.
