Aerial Grid of Palm Oil Plantation Rows

by Katrina Cash

Heat shimmers rise in wavering lines from the sun-baked earth, distorting the rigid geometry of the palm oil plantation below. From a direct overhead vantage point, the orchard unfolds in precise, dark green blocks separated by narrow irrigation channels that reflect the bright late morning sky. The dry season has stripped the ground cover, leaving exposed reddish-brown soil between the dense, fan-like crowns of the trees. Water-filled furrows act as silver ribbons cutting through the organized vegetation, creating a stark contrast against the matte leaves. The layout extends toward the horizon where the distant outline of Old Market near Phnom Penh merges with the haze. The pattern repeats without interruption, a vast grid of agriculture viewed in detached surveying calm.
